STREAMING SERVICE:

golden shovels made for tv

STREAMING SERVICE: golden shovels made for tv is an ode to the historic, moving mode of episodic and serial storytelling. Without regard for genre, location, or air date, Sofía Aguilar borrows spoken tv dialogue penned by other writers and makes each word the sternum of her poems through an unusually structured but culturally transformative poetic form. Blurring the lines between fiction and reality, character and person, identity and heartache, Aguilar honors the stories that shaped her, that have been told before—all while bringing forth her own.

What I find most striking about STREAMING SERVICE is the collection’s versatility – Sofía has taken the golden shovel, stretched it, squeezed it, and cast it into entirely new forms. Each poem, though crafted with careful attention to structure & visual form, is made to seem effortless with easy lyricism & sonic play. Among these poems are odes to family, home, and even the speaker’s past selves that resist simplicity, exploring the tensions that can exist within love – though never at the cost of warmth. A wholly inventive mode of intertexting, Sofía’s chapbook has been enriched by, and in turn, has enriched, the words and worlds of other writers.

…the chapbook’s unique concept is so much fun to read, and Sofía’s masterful writing showcases amazing storytelling, beautiful imagery, and stunning vulnerability…what an incredible collection of poems!
